DEK oncogene (DEK) is a gene that encodes a protein involved in chromatin organization, DNA damage response signaling, and DNA repair (Kavanaugh et al. 2011; UniProt 2013). In cancer, rearrangements involving DEK have been observed in AML. Its role is also being investigated in breast, head and neck, cervical, and bladder cancer, as well as in CLL.


Nucleoporin 214kDa (NUP214) is a gene that encodes a component of the nuclear core complex, a structure that regulates flow of material between the nucleus and cytoplasm (Gene 2013​). In cancer, rearrangements involving DEK have been observed in AML, MDS, and ALL. NUP214 is also known as CAN.

The DEK-NUP214 fusion has been primarily observed in acute myeloid leukemia.
